Enlarge photos and increase image resolution without losing quality

AI rebuilds real detail when it scales your image ×2–×4 instead of just stretching pixels. Free, no sign-up, no watermarks.

How to enlarge a photo without losing quality

  1. Upload an image — drag the file in, pick it from your disk or paste it from the clipboard.
  2. Choose ×2, ×3 or ×4. The service shows the final dimensions straight away and tells you honestly whether it is worth it.
  3. Download the result as PNG, JPG or WebP. No sign-up needed.

When upscaling helps — and when it does not

Upscaling will help

Small but sharp images: avatars, 640×480 frames, old scans, screenshots, drawings and logos. The detail is in there, so the AI has something to build on.

Upscaling will not help

Blurred shots, out-of-focus photos, screenshots of already-stretched pictures and large sharp images. No neural network can restore what is not in the file — only the file size grows.

PixScale measures sharpness, detail, noise and JPEG traces the moment you upload, and gives you a verdict before you spend time on processing.

Upscaling in the browser — your photo never leaves your device

Switch on “On my computer” and your browser does the upscaling itself through WebGPU, falling back to the processor if WebGPU is missing. Nothing is uploaded anywhere, which is handy for documents, personal shots and work material. The model is downloaded once and stays in the browser cache, so the service keeps working even offline.

How to enlarge a photo for printing

Print work starts at 300 DPI: an A4 sheet is roughly 2480×3508 pixels, A3 is 3508×4961, and a 4×6 in print is 1181×1772. Enlarge your shot to the size you need and save it as PNG so that JPEG blocks do not show up on paper.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enlarge a photo without losing quality?

Upload the image, choose the “Enlarge” task and a factor of ×2, ×3 or ×4 — the neural network rebuilds edges and texture instead of simply stretching pixels. Download the result as PNG, JPG or WebP, free and without watermarks.

How is AI upscaling different from ordinary enlargement?

Ordinary enlargement (bicubic or Lanczos) just smears the pixels you already have, which is why the picture ends up soft and mushy. A neural network has been trained to rebuild contours and texture, so lines stay crisp even at four times the size.

When does upscaling really improve a photo and when does it not?

Upscaling helps when a shot is small but sharp: screenshots, artwork, avatars, old scans, 640×480 frames. If the photo is blurred, out of focus or already large and sharp, enlarging it only adds file size — and PixScale warns you about that right after upload.

How do I increase photo resolution for printing?

For print, work from 300 DPI: an A4 sheet is roughly 2480×3508 pixels and A3 is 3508×4961. Set the dimensions you need and save the result as PNG so JPEG artefacts do not show up on paper.

How do I remove pixelation and make a photo look sharper?

Open the “Improve quality” task: “Remove noise” takes out grain, “Remove JPEG artefacts” clears the blocks left by compression, and “Restore detail” pulls back fine texture with AI. If the pixelation came from stretching a small picture, it is better to go back to the original and upscale it ×2.

Can I enlarge an old scanned photo?

Yes — old scans are one of the best cases: the detail is there, there simply are not many pixels. Scan the print as large as you can, then enlarge ×2 or ×4 and remove noise if needed.

How do I resize an image to exact pixel dimensions?

Choose the “Resize” task and set the width and height, a percentage of the original, or an aspect ratio. With the lock enabled, the second side is calculated automatically so the picture does not get squashed.

What does upscaling in the browser actually mean?

Turn on the “On my computer” switch: your browser runs the upscaling on the graphics card through WebGPU, or on the processor if there is no GPU support. The image is never uploaded anywhere, and the model is downloaded once and stays in the cache.

Is it safe to upload personal photos?

Guest files are removed from the server automatically after a few hours, and files from signed-in users after two weeks; they are only reachable through your private link. If you would rather not upload the file at all, switch processing to your own computer — then the image never leaves your browser.

How much does it cost, and are there watermarks?

The service is free, there are no watermarks and no sign-up is required. An account is only needed if you want results kept longer and listed under “My files”.

What is the maximum file and image size?

You can upload files up to {max} MB, and the finished image can be up to {mp} megapixels. If the enlargement would go over the limit, the service highlights it before you start rather than after.

Can I upscale anime art, drawings or pixel art?

Yes. For drawings and graphics the service detects the image type itself and suggests a suitable mode. For pixel art, use the “Resize” task with the Nearest algorithm — it scales pixel for pixel and keeps the edges crisp.

Does the service work on a phone?

Yes, PixScale opens in any mobile browser on Android and iPhone. Phones usually handle on-device processing too, but for large images the server is the safer option.

Why is the enlarged file so much heavier?

A ×4 enlargement contains sixteen times as many pixels, so the growth in size is only natural. To keep the file compact, choose JPG or WebP as the output and drop the quality to 85–90 — the difference is barely visible.
